Adam Varjavandi - Chinese Opera

Adam Varjavandi

Adam hails from Dundee, Scotland and in 2003 came to Macau to take up a “World Citizen” internship with an educational foundation. He soon fell in love with China and its people and in 2004 moved to Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi province, where he excelled as a student obtaining an Honours degree in Chinese Language and Literature from Shaanxi Normal University. There he was taken under the wing of Professor Tang Han, where he pursued an interest in the ancient art of Shaanxi opera.

A talented singer and musician, in 2007, after many months of intensive preparation and rehearsal, Adam became the first non-Chinese person to perform this two thousand year old art form on stage. His remarkable performance led to widespread acclaim in China and in the UK including feature articles in The Sunday Times and the Sunday Mail.

Adam’s deep knowledge and enthusiasm for Chinese language and culture has since resulted in many other media opportunities and appearances on television and radio where he has used his profile to encourage Chinese youth to take a greater interest in music and performance arts as a means to promoting personal development, peace and understanding.

Adam’s services are much in demand. He is currently Head of Chinese Language at Hanova International School in Xi’an and Director of Chinaberry – which provides authentic learning, internships and service opportunities to young people from around the world.
